Black Orchid

Tony Sabina is in town again, “The great Sabina” to his fans. His hypnotic show relies on volunteer participants, among whom are young men Stuart Fraser, and a girl called Frances Shaw. Frances, who was hypnotised to believe she could swim the channel, is found drowned after the show. The resulting publicity leaves Sabina’s career in tatters and he decides to get even with all those who have contributed to his downfall. Mike Jardine and Jackie Reid investigate a series of killings that may have been carried out “to order”.

Julie Smith, a research scientist, is murdered by an unknown assailant. Her body is found on a rubbish dump. It becomes clear that she is another victim of a serial rapist known as “The Mechanic”
